Bill Mathies, President

Bill grew up in South Pasadena and spent many summers with his family in the Balboa area. After graduating from USC, he joined Beverly Enterprises, a healthcare company focused on eldercare services and spent 20 years with the firm. He was EVP of the Company and President of its largest subsidiary from 1996-2002 while based in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

He and his family moved back to California and specifically to the Peninsula Point in 2002, when he accepted the opportunity to join Sun Healthcare as COO and assist the management team in exiting from bankruptcy and reestablishing the Company. He became Chairman/CEO in 2010 and then successfully sold the Company in 2012. Since 2012, Bill has been involved in executive level consulting and advisory services focused on the healthcare sector.

Bill lives with his wife Lisa, a retired attorney, and has two adult daughters who are both married and reside in Southern California. Bill and Lisa also have a home in Park City, Utah which they enjoy frequently. They are both tennis players and enjoy the local benefits of the PPRC. Bill is also involved in our neighborhood 4th of July parade as coordinator of the 20 volunteer intersection monitors (aka the day-go vest brigade)!

Bob Yant, Secretary

Bob moved to the Balboa Peninsula in 1980. In 1981 his life was drastically changed when he suffered a spinal cord injury as a result of an ocean diving accident at Island Avenue on the Peninsula. Since his accident Bob has been a volunteer fund raiser for spinal cord injury nerve regeneration and has raised over $12 million. For 29 years he has been a member of the national board of directors of the group now known as the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.

Bob founded two successful medical supply companies. Research Medical was founded in 1989 and sold in 1996. Cure Medical is a wholesale company that distributes throughout the U.S. plus Canada and Puerto Rico. Both companies adopted a policy of giving 10% of net profits to neuroscientists working to develop a cure for paralysis caused by spinal cord injury. Bob received a bachelor’s degree from U.C. Berkeley.

Bob has been a founder or board member of 14 different charities, including the Newport Elementary School Foundation (Newport Elementary School), the Ensign Fund (Ensign School) and the Newport Harbor Educational Foundation (Newport Harbor High School). Bob has been active in the Balboa Peninsula Point Association, serving as President and many other positions. He is currently web master for the BPPA. Bob co-founded the Community Foundation of Balboa Peninsula Point and continues as a director of CFBPP.

Russ Doll, Treasurer

Russ was born, raised and educated in Southern California. He began his career with Price Waterhouse rising to Senior Manager in the Audit Practice. After 11 years at Price Waterhouse, Russ became Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Pre-Delivery Service Corporation, a former subsidiary of the Ford Motor Company. He next worked at Bell Industries in El Segundo. During his seven years at Bell Indus- tries he served as Chief Financial Officer, President and Chief Executive Officer. Then Russ moved to Fresh Start Bakeries where he was Chief Financial Officer and Chief Executive Officer. After Fresh Start, Russ became Chief Financial Officer and then President of The HAVI Group in Downers Grove, Illinois. He is currently the Chief Financial Officer for Accurate Background in Irvine and a member of the Board of Directors and investor for both Dianne’s Fine Desserts in Chicago and Aspire Bakeries in Los Angeles. In addition, Russ is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana.

Russ moved to the Peninsula Point in 2019 and lives here with his wife, Chris. They also have a home in Villa Park. Russ and Chris are the proud parents of Emily, Jack and Megan.

Ken Drellishak

Ken has been a resident of Balboa Peninsula Point for over 14 years, having relocated here from San Marino, and is a five year member of the Foundation Board. He has been an active member of the Newport Beach community, serving on the BPPA Board, as member and Chair of the Newport Beach Environmental Quality Affairs Committee (EQAC) and as a founding Director of CFBPP.

He served 2 years active duty as a U.S. Army Signal Corps officer and over 30 years as a researcher, product developer and manager for NASA and in the defense/aerospace industry. He retired as Technical Director from Lockheed Martin Corporation.

Ken earned his BME from University of Detroit and Masters and his PhD from Northwestern University in Mechanical Engineering and Astronautical Sciences. He is a regular tennis player at the local PPRC, enjoys playing golf at local public courses and is an avid LA Dodgers fan.

He has 3 children and 5 granddaughters who enjoy spending time with Grandpa at the beach. Peggy, Ken’s wife of 43 years, passed away in 2010 after a long battle with breast cancer.

Tara Shapiro

A twenty-five-year resident, Tara and her husband Mike moved to Peninsula Point in 1999 and quickly embraced our coastal neighborhood. Having had a successful career in the fashion industry, Tara decided to pursue CA real estate in 2012– having previously worked in the field in Chicago. With a love of people, architecture, and our community, Tara focuses on the waterfront neighborhoods of Newport Beach. She and her husband owned HOM Sotheby’s, establishing 11 offices in Orange County and the Desert communities before selling to Pacific Sotheby’s in 2018. In 2022 Tara and Mike introduced EQTY Forbes Global Properties to the same trade areas as the exclusive representative of the Forbes luxury brand.

When not working Tara loves Pilates, fashion, crossword puzzles, and long walks – both with and without Jack Russells – Harry and David. Having previously served as VP of the BPPA, Tara is excited for the opportunity to now work with the Community Foundation.

Brigid O’Connor

Brigid O’Connor came to the Balboa Peninsula Point in 2012 with husband Kevin Vollmer and daughter Maeve, who spent many summers as a Junior Lifeguard and now spends her summers working at Marina Park as a beach camp counselor.

Brigid earned a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Colorado. She worked in law, finance and healthcare as a marketing and communications executive and most recently worked as a consultant to corporations in the same industries.

You can find Brigid walking fast or biking on the boardwalk, cycling madly at Grit up on 17th or just sitting perfectly still at the sand’s edge watching the waves. Kevin and Brigid also enjoy the mountains at their home in Vail, Colorado. Maeve will attend the University of San Diego this Fall.
